Michael Pearce
Michael Pearce's paintings arrive through a dual interest; colour and the paint as a substance in itself. Using oils in large quantities he allows the paint to dictate the direction of a piece, each colour or mass vying for its place in the composition and influencing the next decision. The work has a lot of process based preparation and comes in part from large palettes where he prepares and explores colour combinations that are later transplanted to the paintings. At different points of curing he piles, splits and moves the paint onto wet paint surfaces and wood. Ultimately the final work comes together through a very physical and sculptural approach as the paint is applied by hand, trowels and other instruments or poured directly.
