My work explores the complex relationship between figure and space. I am fascinated by the lyricism of the human form, how we inhabit space, moving and melding together. In my paintings, faces dissolve into facades, as human forms become abstracted through the interplay of colour, shape, surface and light.
In a sense, people become transparent and fragile, behind which lie a complicated subtext of relationships that exist within the painted scene. Through my paintings I combine an outside world of fragmented time with an inner library of images, colours and motifs. These designs become a 'decor' - a kind of false framework for captured moments and memories.
Alongside this, and possibly most importantly, my work is driven by process. The gritty medium of paint. All its possibilities and happy accidents. I try to allow the painting to direct itself.
