Maria Tribe Maria Tribe was born in Brighton and has been painting professionally since 1994. Her paintings are based on encounters which range from small moments in time to journeys around the world. The work draws on history, stories, songs, monuments, the marking of events,
and also the details of everyday life. There is a fascination with the
process of memory and the fragments that remain. The work is a fusion of
these triggers and a meditation on an experience or journey. Inspiration is
derived from landscape, architecture, colour, music, language and people Growing up by the sea developed a passion for water, scuba diving and the luminous colours of underwater seascapes. The paintings are an extension of the sketchbooks which are central to the work and are often incorporated directly into the pieces using print and drawing techniques, giving them their diary-like quality. Drawings, photographs and collected materials are gathered together to later be used in the studio. There is a balance and a tension between the looseness of paint and the more
graphic qualities of drawings, print and photography. The process is very
instinctive and the working process is very much about creating
unconsciously, having a "conversation" with a piece, allowing elements to |
