Irene Abena Adoma Mensah http://irene1mensah.moonfruit.com As a visual artist, a love of performance and the temporary reality of a told narrative are used as the basis for creating installations, which explore ancestral relationships in contemporary settings. Text and sound often interact within an intriguing environment, encouraging the viewer to cross a threshold where time is suspended within meticulous constructions of her favourite artistic ingredients. These installations and drawings hint at the presence of an unseen performance, where untold half-truths and partial facts linger as clues, to form an alternative version of our recognised memories. Her latest collaborative work with visual artist Jane Fox is a site specific installation for the House Open Exhibition at the Regency Town House: Mutter, matter, murmurings from the kitchen table. It explores their texts inherited from their respective grandmothers and the disordering of kitchen and table etiquette as well as personal memories. Other current collaborative work is with the Black History artists group ‘Artetat’, with exhibitions and public interaction in May for the Brighton Festival 2011. New collaborative work |
